Testing a Telescope

The spinning Earth makes sky objects appear to rise and set. ALMA's telescopes must track their moving targets precisely in every kind of temperature and weather. Scientists and engineers put each telescope through boot camp to make sure it is able to handle this complex task.

Here, Mechanical Engineer Nick Emerson is aiming a 12-meter wide telescope at the Sun using a small spotting camera built into the dish. The camera shows him that the telescope is on target, and software readouts let him know how perfect that pointing and tracking is.
