The Turbulent Life of Two Supermassive Black Holes Caught in a Galaxy Crash
The Turbulent Life of Two Supermassive Black Holes Caught in a Galaxy Crash
January 5, 2020 at 3:14 pm | News Release

An international team of astronomers used ALMA to create the most detailed image yet of the gas surrounding two supermassive black holes in a merging galaxy.

ALMA Spots Most Distant Dusty Galaxy Hidden in Plain Sight
December 11, 2019 at 12:00 pm | News Release

Astronomers using ALMA have spotted the light of a massive galaxy seen only 970 million years after the Big Bang!

Gas ‘Waterfalls’ Reveal Infant Planets around Young Star
October 16, 2019 at 1:00 pm | News Release

For the first time, astronomers using ALMA have witnessed 3D motions of gas in a planet-forming disk. At three locations in the disk around a young star called HD 163296, gas is flowing like a waterfall into gaps that are most likely caused by planets in formation.

Going Against the Flow Around a Supermassive Black Hole
October 15, 2019 at 1:00 pm | News Release

At the center of a galaxy called NGC 1068, a supermassive black hole hides within a thick doughnut-shaped cloud of dust and gas. When astronomers used ALMA to study this cloud in more detail, they made an unexpected discovery that could explain why supermassive black holes grew so rapidly in the early Universe.

First Canadian ALMA Large Program to Investigate the Impact of Galaxy Environment on Star Formation
September 18, 2019 at 10:00 am | Announcement

The first ever Canadian-led Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program has been approved for cycle 7. Dr. Brown and his colleagues will use the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) to study the influence of galaxy environment on star formation in the Virgo Cluster.

Image Release: ALMA Shows What’s Inside Jupiter’s Storms
August 20, 2019 at 3:55 pm | News Release

New radio wave images made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) provide a unique view of Jupiter’s atmosphere down to fifty kilometers below the planet’s visible cloud deck.

Using the both ALMA and the VLT, astronomers have imaged the cold, rock-strewn rings encircling the planet Uranus. Rather than observing the reflected sunlight from these rings, ALMA and the VLT imaged the millimeter and mid-infrared “glow” naturally emitted by the frigidly cold particles of the rings themselves.

June 5, 2019 at 1:00 pm | News Release

New ALMA observations reveal a never-before-seen disk of cool, interstellar gas wrapped around the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

The Giant In Our Backyard
April 16, 2019 at 9:55 am | News Feature

For decades astronomers have dreamed of seeing a black hole. That dream may soon become a reality.

Using the EHT, with ALMA as its most sensitive component, astronomers have captured the first direct visual evidence of a black hole: an image of the supermassive black hole at the center of Messier 87 (M87), a giant elliptical galaxy 55 million light-years from Earth.
