Are There Any Nearby Stars in the Galaxy That Are a Million Times the Size of the Sun?

-- David | October 13, 2020

Question:

Are there any stars in our galaxy that are Approx 1.017E+12 km in diameter that are approx 5.464E+13 km from our sun?

Answer:

A star that is 5.464×10^(13) km away from Earth is about 1.77 parsecs away, which is relatively close.  A star that is 1.017×10^(12) km in diameter would be about one million times larger than our Sun, whose diameter is 1.39×10^6 km.  As far as I know the largest star known is VY Canis Majoris, which is a red hypergiant star that is thought to be about 1800 times the size of the Sun.
