Association Between Magnetar Emission and the 2004 Tsunami
Question: The magnatar that struck the earth in Dec, 2004 was it ever associated with the tsunami that struck off the coast of India in Dec 2004 Very close time frames as reported as far as dates but heh That magnetar is a rather scary thing don’t you think. — Greg
Answer: No. There is absolutely no connection between the emission from a magnetar that struck the Earth in 2004 and the tsunami that resulted from an earthquake in 2004. The impact of the energy wave from the magnetar did saturate many satellite detectors, and also partially ionized the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This impact was rather weak due to the distance to the magnetar, about 50,000 light years. If it had been closer, its impact would have been more significant. That said, I don’t see any way that the impact of a magnetar’s energy on the Earth could cause a tsunami.
