Background Lights in Comet NEOWISE Video

-- Jay | July 15, 2020

Question:

While watching a video of Neowise comet from ISS I noticed 5 different times that bright flashes occurred in what appears to be deep space. Are these events explained by anything natural? I’ve scoured the web and can’t find nothing about them. Video was filmed July 9. Thanks for your time.

Sincerely, Jay Nexsen

Answer:

If you are referring to this video posted by CBS News and created by Sean Doran, I believe what you are seeing are instances when there are reflections within the optics of the camera system they used that are causing the transient lights you are seeing.  These objects are very unlikely to be astronomical sources.
