Hoaxes in Astronomy

-- | May 29, 2012

Question:  I had a question about the planet Nibiru.  Does it exist?  I recently read something about a scientist finding a planet on the edge of the Solar System and was wondering if it was Nibiru?  — Sarah

Answer:  No, Nibiru does not exist.  The Nibiru myth is one of many “hoaxes” that use incorrect or misinterpreted astronomical information to propagate misinformation.  I have collected several articles on an associated hoax regarding sensationalism surrounding “2012” at my Clearing the Myth and Sensationalism Regarding the 2012 Hoax wiki page.  There is an article on the Nibiru myth (as it has been applied to the 2012 hoax) which you might find enlightening.  If there is interest in more information on “astro hoaxes” I can add additional posts if requested.
