How Does One Distinguish Between Auroral and Magnetic Field Activity on a Brown Dwarf?
Question: Was reading about SIMP J01365663+0933473 and was wondering how you separate aurora activity from magnetic activity created by the core of the brown star/super planet? Different frequency signature? — Philip
Answer: In fact, the auroral activity measured at radio wavelengths from J01365663+0933473 is thought to be due to the interaction between this brown dwarf’s magnetic field and an orbiting planet or moon. As these radio frequency measurements are also observed to be pulsed over time periods of hours, these measurements require an interaction which changes over relatively short time scales, such as that which one gets from interactions between a star’s magnetic field and its surroundings.
