How to Calculate the Orbital Period of the Sun Around the Center of our Galaxy

-- Ekhson | January 29, 2023

Question:

Hi,
It is accepted that it takes for Sun about 200 million years to orbit the center of our Galaxy. I would appreciate if you either explain or refer me to the technical site which describes how this period was determined? I tried to search internet, however either search word were ill defined or there are no such publications, which I doubt…
Thank you in advance.

Answer:

I believe that this question has been addressed in a previous answer to a question about the Orbital Period of the Sun in the Milky Way Galaxy.  The calculation uses the known galactic orbital velocity of the Sun at the known distance from the center of our Galaxy, as described in our previous answer.
