How to Determine Where the Moon (or Any Other Object in the Sky) Will Be From a Given Location

-- Philip H Metlin | September 2, 2020

Question:

Hi,

I want to photograph the full moon with the Washington monument on Wednesday morning. I see the moon will set at 6:47 am with its azimuth around 300 degrees. I am thinking it will be best to be on the south side of the monument to get the moon crossing the monument’s path. How can I determine the best time for this photo? Thanks you very much!

Answer:

Really the best thing to do is to use an application on one’s cell phone which shows what objects are in the sky from a person’s current location.  One such application is SkyView, which allows you to point your phone to a particular location in the sky and have it show you what astronomical objects are located in the sky in that direction.
