Solstices and the Path of the Sun Through the Sky

Question:

As the sun sets through the summer, it moves west to northwest across the horizon. When does it reverse direction? Thx cb

Answer:

The Sun reverses the apparent shift of its path through the sky at the winter and summer solstices each year, which correspond to the points in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is pointed most directly away (winter) or towards (summer) the Sun.  Within a few days of December 21 each year the Sun’s path stops moving southward and begins a slow migration to the north.  Correspondingly, within a few days of June 21 each year the Sun’s path stops moving northward and begins a slow migration to the south.
