Undergraduate Course Preparation for Graduate School in Astrophysics

-- James | January 31, 2022

Question:

Hello. I am currently on my way to finish my BSc in Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences. My first question is if i can get accepted for a masters degree in astophysics, because till now i have attended courses in quantum mechanics, particle physics, electromagnetism and only one course related to astrophysics, in general theory of relativity and cosmology (then my plan is to go for a PhD in black holes).

Also (even if i get accepted for the masters), will i have a disadvantage in comparison with someone that has the same masters and PhD BUT with a physics and astronomy BSc? Thanks a lot in advance, you would be really really helpful!!!

Answer:

It is common for students entering graduate school in astrophysics to have a limited background in undergraduate astrophysics course preparation.  A strong foundation in physics and mathematics is much more important than having taken courses in astrophysics as an undergraduate.  Most astrophysics graduate programs have their students take foundational courses in astrophysics during their first two years of study, so you should have no problem gaining the background in astrophysics necessary to complete your degree.
