What Are the Astronomical Uses of the 13.36 to 13.41 MHz Radio Frequency Allocation?

-- Keith | November 29, 2021

Question:

Hello,
I was just looking at the FCC radio frequency allocations table. I noticed that the range of frequencies between 13.36 Mhz and 13.41 Mhz. is reserved for radio astronomy.
Why is that frequency range specifically reserved?

Thank you,

Keith

Answer:

According to the “Handbook of Frequency Allocations and Spectrum Protection for Scientific Uses” published by the National Academy of Sciences, the allocated frequency band from 13.36 to 13.41 MHz is for continuum measurements of the Sun, Jupiter, interstellar medium, and steep spectrum radio continuum sources.
