Question:

Astronomy vs physics major
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read this.
I’ve always wanted to be an astronomer or astrophysicist and now I have to choose which bachelor to do. I’m torn between astronomy and physics (which are the ones offered by the open university, where I intend to study). Do you have any recommendations on which one is better in order to do a master in astrophysics afterwards?
I hope you have a great day 🙂

Answer:

Since astronomy is a physical science that applies physics principals extensively, pursuing an undergraduate education in either physics or astronomy is a reasonable path to an eventual career in astronomy.  The choice should be made on how onc’s interests align with the subject matter taught within each of the two options.  For example, if the subject matter taught through the astronomy major program is better aligned with your interests, that would be a better option.  Note also that a search on “Careers in Astronomy” within this blog will provide quite a few answers to similar questions.
