In June of 2017, NRAO invited four artists to a conference at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to interpret the four science cases that will drive the design of the ngVLA. Galactic Ecosystem by New Media Artist, Eddie Edwards: “This piece is not so much about the process of sequence of events, even though star formation and the cycle of regeneration are part of it, as it is about the ever-present activity of forces within the ecosystem — a grand ballet of magnetic fields, gases, pulsars, black holes and gravity fields that are not directly visible to us and are only understood through the interpretation of the energy they emit.”

Interpreting Science through Art. Time Domain Astronomy and the Next-Generation Very Large Array
In June of 2017, NRAO invited four artists to a conference at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to interpret the four science cases that will drive the design of the ngVLA. Jon Ramer, president of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, describes how he painted ngVLA science case on Time Domain, Cosmology, and Physics: “As I climbed inside one of the VLA dishes I was struck with an image of different packets of data streaming in from the universe, each at different energy intensities and frequencies. This image shows data coming into the receiver and beaming down to the computers to be analyzed.”
Can you figure out the secret message he inserted into the data stream in the painting on the left?

In June of 2017, NRAO invited four artists to a conference at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to interpret the four science cases that will drive the design of the ngVLA. Galaxy Assembly Through Cosmic Time by NRAO Artist/Illustrator, Bill Saxton: “Fascination by the stories and information that can be derived by the observation and analysis of the inert presence, composition, or motion of cold gas throughout the universe is the inspiration for this work. Although they are invisible, I marvel in awe that these omnipresent gases hold the history of the evolution of the universe and therefore the stories of all of us in them.”
