VLA Rail Team keeps tracks in operation
With over 80 miles of railway track to maintain, the Very Large Array technical staff have skills in railway maintenance. This is a ballast tamper that lifts the railroad ties and then flattens the gravel ballast to keep the rail level. This is critical work for the VLA whose 27 state-of-the-art antennas ride these rails on their Transporters several times a year.
