On October 29, 2022, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) suffered a cyberattack on its computer systems, forcing the suspension of astronomical observations and the public website. This event is under investigation by local authorities.
The Computing team quickly isolated the Antennas and Correlator systems and the Science Archive data systems. However, communication and other operational clusters were affected, forcing ALMA to stop all observations.
Since then, email communication has been restored safely, along with new collaboration tools that enable the staff to continue their regular work.
The Crisis Management Team has developed a full-recovery plan in consultation with cyber security officers from ESO/NAOJ/NRAO. Our highest priority is to work hard to resume observations before the end of the year.

Actualización de ALMA sobre la recuperación del ciberataque
El 29 de octubre de 2022, el Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) sufrió un ciberataque a sus sistemas informáticos, lo que obligó a suspender las observaciones astronómicas y el sitio web. Este evento está siendo investigado por las autoridades locales.
El equipo de informática de ALMA pudo aislar rápidamente los sistemas de Antenas y Correlacionadores, así como los sistemas de datos del Archivo Científico. Sin embargo, la comunicación y otros clústeres operativos se vieron afectados, obligando a detener todas las observaciones.
Desde entonces, la comunicación por correo electrónico se ha podido restablecer de forma segura junto con nuevas herramientas de colaboración que han permitido al personal continuar con su trabajo habitual.
El Equipo de Gestión de Crisis ha desarrollado un plan de recuperación total, en consulta con los jefes de seguridad cibernética de ESO, NAOJ y NRAO. La máxima prioridad es reanudar las observaciones antes de fin de año.

November 2, 2022: ALMA Services Affected by Cyberattack
Last Saturday, October 29, at 6:14 AM CLT, the ALMA observatory in Chile suffered a cyberattack on its computer systems, forcing the suspension of astronomical observations and the public website. There are limited email services at the observatory. The threat has been contained, and our specialists are working hard to restore affected systems. The attack did not compromise the ALMA antennas or any scientific data. Given the nature of the episode, it is not yet possible to estimate a timeline for a return to regular activities. We are thankful for the support and understanding across the ALMA partnership and apologize for any inconveniences resulting from the recovery efforts.

Servicios de ALMA afectados por ciberataque
El pasado sábado 29 de octubre, a las 06:14 horas CLT, el observatorio ALMA en Chile sufrió un ciberataque a sus sistemas informáticos, lo que obligó a suspender las observaciones astronómicas y su sitio web. Los servicios de correo electrónico del observatorio se encuentran funcionando de manera limitada. La amenaza ha sido contenida y nuestros especialistas están trabajando arduamente para restaurar los sistemas afectados. El ataque no comprometió las antenas de ALMA ni ningún dato científico. Dada la naturaleza del episodio, aún no es posible estimar un plazo para el regreso a las actividades regulares. Estamos agradecidos por el apoyo y la comprensión de todos los socios de ALMA y nos disculpamos por cualquier inconveniente que resulte de los esfuerzos de recuperación.
